About Flight Attendant Diary

Working as a flight attendant, I love most aspects of my job. I like to share my ups and downs, inside stories, jokes, adventurous experiences and of course, cabin gossips with people who are curious about the airline industry. Check out my blog often!

Open House Dos and Don’ts - Part I

Most airlines host an Open House (aka cattle call) when they recruit, as it gives the airline a good opportunity to screen a large number of applicants in a very short period of time.  Even though the agenda of an Open House varies between airlines, the structure is somewhat similar; the recruiters will have an opportunity to review the applicants’ applications and resumes, and the applicants will have an opportunity to introduce and “sell” themselves in a group and/or an individual setting.

As mentioned earlier, there will be a lot of applicants at an Open House, especially when hiring for a national airline. You might spend hours and hours waiting with a bunch of applicants and only get a few minutes to meet a recruiter. Thus, you must make yourself STAND OUT.

I had a couple of opportunities to participate in Open Houses of different airlines and I have the following suggestions to the wannabes:

What to wear

Do’s

suit - female1 For ladies - play safe and wear suit!  Suit in conservative colour = dark blue, black and dark grey should be worn.  Make sure you are not wearing tank tops, tees, spaghetti straps etc inside your suit.  Wear a blouse / shirt (no see-through please!) with collars inside that complements the colour of your suit.  I highly suggest you wear a skirt with a length that is 1 inch above or below your knees rather than pants.  Middle Eastern airlines such as Emirates like applicants that wear skirts, and a blouse inside your jacket that covers your chest and lower part of your neck.  Wear flawless and partern-less pantyhose and simple black pumps with a little bit of heels.  Don’t show your toes.

Light and neutral makeup should be worn.  Accessories should be as simple as possible - i.e. small and conservative earrings - one each earlobe plus a martial ring if you have.  No other facial/body piercing should be shown.

Bring a small purse plus a portfolio/briefcase for your resume - black or conservative colour.

For gentlemen - easy – conservative suit with a nice tie is great.  Make sure your shoes shine.

Most importantly, make sure you are comfortable with what you are wearing.

Don’ts

I have seen people who worn sleeveless, tank top, mini skirts, ripped jeans to open house as they thought it is just a job fair.  These are no-nos.  Recruiters start evaluating you the minute you walk into the hotel/conference room, or wherever the Open House is conducted.

I have also seen people who wear attire that assembles the flight attendant uniform.  I think this is too pretentious and unnecessary.  Be yourself.

…more tips to follow, this is only PART I

  1. Yukichichiri Said,

Do you think that eye liner would be appropriate for the interview?

Does it matter if my hair is down or would it be better to have a hair updo?

Thank you! Keep up the great work!

  2. Yukichichiri Said,

What is consisted in a portfolio? Is it mandatory to have one in hand? What are you suggestions to make impressive interview at the open house? Thank uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Dear!

  3. flight attendant diary Said,

    Hi Yukichichiri,

For eyeliner: it is fine using eyeliner as long as they are black and they dont’ smudge. I suggest you use it only on your upper eyeline for a natural look. Personally I don’t use eyeliner on flights because they smudge on me, but there are flight attendants who wear them perfectly. I need to learn their tricks :P

I think hair matters alot. The majority of carriers require ladies to put their hair up for a clean look. Also, it is due to sanitary reasons because we serve food and beverage on the flight. Some airlines need you to updo your hair in some kind of a bun, some would permit ponytails. If your hair is longer than shoulder length, I suggest you make a bun. If you have bangs touching below your eyebrows, they should be pulled to the back or trimmed. Make sure you use black or a colour that matches your own hair colour for hair accessories. Keep it simple. Putting your hair up conveys a mature and professional image at airline interviews.

    Hope this helps!

  4. flight attendant diary Said,

I suggest a portfolio case (maybe I wasn’t clear :P)/briefcase to keep your resume straight. That’s the main purpose of it. If your purse is big enougth for your resume, you don’t have to bring a separate case for it.

My next blog on Open House Dos and Don’ts will talk about how to WOW your interviewer. Stay Tuned~~~~ (got to catch my 3rd leg of the day :P)

  5. Yukichichiri Said,

    Thank you for this input!

  6. Sage Said,

Eyeliner - try Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliner or MAC’s Fluidline products. They need to be applied with a brush so it’s more finicky than a pencil but it will last ALL DAY without smudging, even more so if you layer it over the UDPP :)

  7. flight attendant diary Said,

Thanks! I have heard a lot of good things about Bobbi Brown but have never tried their stuff. I will give their gel eyeliner a try!
